Featured Projects

Land and River Drilling

The drilling department completed a geotechnical investigation for a State Route Bridge replacement over the Maumee River.  The current bridge had insufficient lane widths, inadequate pedestrian and bicycle accomodations, and an aging structure in need of replacement.  TTL performed 26 borings to depths ranging from 7 feet to 40  feet below existing  site grades. All of the land borings were performed using a Geoprobe® 7822 DT drill rig with hollow stem augers and SPT sampling.  Five Shelby tubes were obtained in softer cohesive strata.  Ten feet of rock coring was performed utilizing NQ series core barrels.  The land borings had to be performed in two mobilizations, one in September and the second in late December and early January due to the presence of Indiana bat trees in the vicinity.  One of the biggest obstacles was obtaining  borings at the proposed pier locations within the river, which is very shallow along this stretch and the riverbed is comprised of hard dolomite bedrock.  TTL developed a plan, coupled with the use of a river bottom contour map to drive a drill rig directly into the river at each of the proposed pier locations.   The completed bridge is an eight span structure with composite concrete deck and a pre-stressed concrete I-beam superstructure supported by  reinforced concrete solid wall piers and stub concrete abutments.

Transportation Drilling

Featured Project: Interstate 75

The project was for the section of I-75 / 475 near downtown Toledo. TTL drilled over 100 borings for bridges, retaining walls, ramps & road realignment. The borings ranged from 10 feet to 100 feet and some locations required night drilling due to lane closures. This is just one example of TTL’s transportation expertise and our continued work on Interstates, State Routes, and Toll Roads throughout the region.
